You get the error “Location not available” Access denied, when you try to access any drive except C: on your Windows 10 machine Even if you take ownership of drive and give proper security permissions you still get same error.
Solution: Excluding C drive all the other drives are treated as external/removable drives by Windows OS and hence it prevents the access to the drives. Even you cannot see size of the drives when you see them in My Computer (explorer) however you can see size and permissions from Computer Management- Disk Management.
Make sure local Administrators group has ownership of the drives and other security permissions on drive are properly configured before you try the GPO changes.
To resolve the issue you will have to update the Local Group Policy settings. By default the settings are not defined however sometimes they do not work properly and hence you need to define the settings to resolve the issue.
Start -> Run and then type MMC and hit Enter.
On the MMC console From File menu select Add/Remove Snap-in
Select Group Policy Object Editor and Click Add. Make sure “Local Computer” is highlighted and then click Finish. And finally click OK to open Group Policy Editor.
Click-> Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then System then Removable Storage Access.
The title bar should show you
[Console Root\Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access]
Now change the state for following policies to “Disabled”
CD and DVD: Deny execute access
CD and DVD: Deny read access
CD and DVD: Deny write access
Removable Disks: Deny execute access
Removable Disks: Deny read access
Removable Disks: Deny write access
All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access
Please make sure above mentioned group policy settings are marked as disabled and then exit MMC console and reboot your machine to apply machine level policies.
